Gala 2018 Making an Impact

Saturday, September 22, 2018

"North Shore Senior Center has been a huge source of support to older adults and their family members for more than 60 years. Our support groups offer a safe place for people to share their joys and struggles as well as their knowledge and coping strategies with others who are experiencing similar issues," said Kathy Honeywell, director of Senior and Family Services.

North Shore Senior Center's Caregiver Support Program offers:

Supportive counseling: A family caregiver can meet one-on-one with a Caregiver Specialist to discuss issues, set goals or talk through feelings.

Respite care - provision of care for a loved one intended to give the caregiver a needed break. Services can be provided at home, in a nursing facility or Adult Day Program.

Powerful Tools for Caregivers: A six week educational series for family caregivers focusing on self-care, reducing stress, communicating more effectively and handling difficult emotions.

Caregiver support groups: A number of caregiver support groups are offered at various locations. Specific groups include those caring for people with memory loss, Parkinson’s disease, and Grandparents Raising Grandchildren.

Gap-filling funds: A small grant that can be utilized to pay for something for a loved one that the caregiver cannot readily afford. This can be used to purchase things such as adaptive technology, medical supplies or a window air conditioner.

Special events: A caregiver celebration is held in November in honor of National Family caregiver month. Other educational or social events may be offered throughout the year.
